As a general rule a box cushion
looks far better if the foam is slightly bigger than the cover
If your making new covers and you have 5” foam then make a 4” box cushion. If you have 4” box cushion cover then go for 5” foam or 4” with a wrap of Dacron You should also add 1” to the front to back measurement of the required foam to achieve a good tight fit
|
How to measure
I need to know the length, width and
thickness of foam you require. Measure your cover rather
than the old foam, feather or fibre cushions as these may
have compressed over time.
If you have feather or fibre cushions the border width of the cover is the most important measurement .
My
rule of thumb is :
The border width of the
cover +12oz Dacron wrap equals a full fitting cushion
Just fitting foam to the thickness
of the border can leave you with an ugly ill-fitting cushion

What grade
should I go for?
|
|
|
Don’t agonise too much over this as its a simple choice.
For everyday use always choose
a high density foam such as RX39 Reflex 400 or RG50
All available in firm or medium hardness. For occasional use then choose a medium grade such as RX36 or the SM foam range.
Stop Press
Density and Firmness are NOT
the same thing
We sell low density firm foam
and high density soft cushions
|
Foam Grades explained
Foam is graded by Density first then
firmness for example CM30/80 :-
30 = 30kg per cu/m and 80 Newton's firm
This would be great foam for a headboard
RX39/200 Is a high density and high firmness
rating and is a fantastic firm seating foam

For use outside the home foam
should have a low melamine content. Low melamine foam copes
far better in damp conditions and lasts longer
Rx, RG, Reflex and Our SM Range
are either Low melamine or melamine free.

STOCKINETTE
What's that all about ?
|
|
|
|
If possible you should
always cover your foam with stockinette,
It acts as a barrier between foam and fabric reducing wear to the fabric. It make it a damn sight easier to fit too !
